Wanting to get out and explore, we were in need of a quick day trip. Our family usually travels to Dawsonville to shop at the North Georgia Premium Outlets Mall. I absolutely love the deals we receive while shopping there. To be honest, we rarely travel pass the Mall. I just knew there had to be some kind of cool landmark, museum or something. Well, we were right!
Located only 10 minutes pass the Outlets Mall is the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame. While it is connected to the Dawsonville City Hall the two are separate buildings.
The Hall of Fame is a great place to visit for the racecar lover in your group. Take a blast through the past looking at race cars from the 1930’s on through to present day. The Museum is full of self-guided information as well as enthusiastic tour guides that are full of knowledge. Needless to say, customer service here is phenomenal.
Start your tour within the Stock Car History Theater where the seats are in the shape of the back of 1950’s Oldsmobile’s. Enjoy learning about the history of the stock cars and moonshine. Afterwards you’ll get to look at actual race car’s through their time period. Only thing is you can’t get in and sit in any of the vehicles. I really wanted to feel like I was a part of the action, but my pic is an outside looking in type of deal…no worries though!
Huston Platt’s Dixie Twister is just one of many race cars that you can see while here.
View racing attire and other racing gear while on site. The Richard Petty signatures are one of kind. Fun fact: Richard Petty’s dad, Lee Petty also signed his name in the same manner.
There is so much to see and do at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame. The tour guide informed us that the exhibits change yearly to encourage fans to keep coming back. Check out our visit in the video below.
The gift shop is full of racing memorabilia for you to purchase. T-shirts, collectible racing cars, autographed memorabilia, corn hole stands and so much more.
On the way out be sure to visit the Dawsonville Moonshine Distillery. I suggest visiting on the way out because this moonshine will have you forgetting why you were there in the first place! The distillery offers guided tours through the distillery that show you the making from beginning to end. At the end of the tour you are given a choice of your own shot glass as a keepsake. The tour is only $6.00 and worth every dime. Be sure to try the White Lightning!!!!!!!
